Julie Morris: Cookbook Author

This is the story of Julie Morris, an accomplished cookbook author in Los Angeles, California who specializes in superfoods; and, how she became a published author for the first time.

Julie’s relationship with superfoods began when she was in college.

“I was in college for Art and Design ,” Julie says, ” and then I started to develop all of the symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. So, I decided to go out there and see if there was something I could do to heal myself.”

That’s when she discovered superfoods — the food-type that would define her career.

“There was nothing out there in terms of what to do with [superfoods] in recipes,” she says. “I had to find that for myself.”

At first, Julie developed recipes for herself. Then, as she experienced success in the kitchen, she decided to publish a superfoods cookbook.

But, publishers rejected her idea repeatedly. Superfoods weren’t “a thing”. So, Julie said, “it’s not just going to happen on its own,” and she chose to self-publish.

Writing her first cookbook took Julie an entire year. She did everything herself: picking the paper, choosing the fonts, taking the photos, aligning the recipes — everything.

It’s an atypical path, Julie acknowledges, but the finished product stood strong; and, she has two pieces of advice for first-time cookbook authors.

“The first is: be authentic. Find your own culinary voice. Figure out what it is that excites you. Don’t just copy something that you see on Instagram.”

“The second piece of advice is to go out there and don’t quit. You’re going to get some rejections along the way. But, don’t quit. Believe in yourself.”

She also has a terrific definition of success.

“Success is being able to do what you love. If you’re able to do that on a daily basis — and make a living at it — you’re rich. That’s rich. That’s it.”
